Alpena County Sheriff's Office Jail
The Alpena County Sheriff's Office & Jail is operated by the Alpena County Sheriff's Office. The official facility type is county jail and local detention. It holds people arrested in Alpena County by sheriff deputies, City of Alpena police, Michigan State Police, and other local agencies. It also holds people awaiting arraignment, bond, trial, sentencing, or transport, as well as people serving county jail sentences or held on warrants and court orders.
The facility should not be described as a state prison. No MDOC prison, BOP facility, ICE detention center, regional jail, work-release annex, or separate city jail was located inside Alpena County in the official sources reviewed. The City of Alpena Police Department has 24-hour police service from the Alpena Public Safety Facility, but its page does not publish a jail roster or long-term detention operation. Local arrestees should be treated as county-jail custody unless transferred by court or agency action.
Alpena County Jail Capacity
The official county location page says voters approved construction, operation, furnishing, and equipping of a new Alpena County Jail on November 7, 2017. The new facility was completed in 2021, inmates moved in on October 31, 2021, and all sheriff and jail operations now occur there. The county lists 94 inmate beds in the current jail and 69 beds in the old jail. It also lists 28,013 square feet in the new building and 16,500 square feet in the former building.
The county published unusually specific construction details. The building used 49,500 concrete blocks, and 35 percent of the work was performed by eight Alpena County contractors. Public image labels on the jail location page identify booking, prebooking, medical, medical 2, flex dorm, cells, main corrections area, lobby, laundry, and kitchen spaces.
The Alpena County jail location page is the source for the bed count, move-in date, square footage, and published construction images.
The location page is also the best official source for confirming that jail operations moved to the M-32 W facility.
Look Up Jail Inmates
The correct lookup path for this facility is the county jail roster, not MDOC OTIS. Start from the sheriff Corrections & Jail page and choose Current Inmates, or open the Alpena County JailTracker roster directly. The roster is for current local custody. If it does not load, or if a person was just arrested, call the jail at 989-354-9830 and use the corrections option.
- Open the official Alpena County JailTracker current-inmate roster.
- Search by last name first, then add the first name if needed.
- Confirm the agency context is Alpena County, Michigan.
- Open the matching profile if the roster exposes one.
- Check charges, bond, booking date, arresting agency, and holds where visible.
- Use FOIA or the jail phone line for records not shown online.

Bond Payments at the Jail
Alpena County's bond page says a person can be bonded out at any time. Bonds may be posted at the sheriff's office or online through JailATM. Credit or debit card bond payments carry a charge of $2.50 or 10 percent, whichever is greater. The bond page also lists a $2 transaction fee for cash. The commissary page lists slightly different kiosk fee wording, so confirm current fee treatment before payment.
Each person booked into the Alpena County Jail receives a $12 booking fee. A $10 warrant fee applies if the arrestee was served when an arrest warrant was processed. The commissary page says booking and warrant fees must be paid in full before funds can be used for commissary items.
Booking and Medical Screening
Alpena County does not publish a step-by-step booking manual, but the county's public building labels and Michigan jail rules show the general process. A local arrest can lead to transport to the jail, prebooking, booking, search and property handling, identity checks, booking fees, medical and mental-health screening, classification, housing, phone access, and court or bond routing. Michigan Administrative Rule R 791.731 requires health screening of all inmates by trained staff designated by the facility administrator.
The sheriff phone menu includes Option 7 for jail nurse, and the public jail slideshow includes medical and medical 2 spaces. Public program detail is thinner. No official jail page was located for GED, vocational training, substance-abuse programming, work release, religious services, grievance deadlines, or reentry partnerships. Contact the jail for current programming and eligibility.
When Inmates Leave Alpena Jail
A person may leave the jail by release on bond, release after court order, completion of a county sentence, transfer to another county, transfer to MDOC after sentencing, or transfer to federal or immigration custody. Once someone enters MDOC custody, search the MDOC OTIS locator. For federal prison, use the BOP inmate locator. For adult immigration detention, use the ICE detainee locator.
Note: Confirm custody and visitation with the jail before traveling because court dates, bond orders, and transfers can change status quickly.
